Reviewing website visibility in search results and AI-generated answers

Begin with what an AI answer actually says

When someone asks an AI assistant for a suitable service, how is your business described? That is a useful starting point for GEO: work intended to improve how information is discovered and represented in generated answers.

A brand mention, a source link and a purchase are different outcomes. Measuring them separately makes the topic easier to understand. This guide uses official information checked on September 6, 2026. The prompts and worksheets are editorial examples, not results from a live Ranked AI experiment. Confirm the tracking specification before relying on a score

Ranked documents prompt entry under Rankings → Prompts, with country targeting and results showing appearances in answers and citations. Adding prompts

At the time of review, public descriptions differed: the operating guide described monthly rescans and three services, the free checker described daily tracking and six models, and the software page described eight models. Confirm the supported models, refresh interval and manual rescan options for your account. Free checker · Software overview

Retain the collection date alongside each result. A current-looking dashboard is difficult to interpret if you do not know when the underlying answer was obtained.

Include prompts without your brand name

Branded questions show what happens when someone already knows you. Also include problems and buying conditions that could introduce a new customer to the category. For an imaginary coffee business, consider these examples.

Editorial prompt ideas
TypeExampleWhat to inspect
ProblemHow should a beginner choose low-acidity coffee beans?Useful selection criteria
ComparisonWhich small coffee tasting sets ship to my country?Relevant availability
BrandedWho is this store suitable for?Accurate positioning
Before purchaseDoes this set arrive as whole beans?Correct product details

Keep a small, stable prompt set rather than changing the wording at every check. Separate languages and markets, and record the actual delivery region or budget constraint used. If the prompt changes, label it as a new comparison rather than a continuation of the old one.

Separate mentions, citations and visits

A mention is the brand appearing in the answer. A citation or link points to a source. A visit means someone reached the site. An inquiry or order is a further outcome. These distinctions help explain why a visibility score alone is not a business result.

If your name appears in two of ten selected prompts, report exactly that. It does not mean your business appears in 20% of all AI answers. Inspect which URL was cited and whether the answer accurately describes the current offer.

Similarly, an absent mention is not automatically a problem. First ask whether your business is actually suitable for that question. Otherwise, measurement can encourage chasing audiences you cannot help.

Treat indexing claims separately from answer inclusion

Ranked describes an AI Search Indexing workflow. Treat this as the provider's description of its work, not a guarantee that every AI platform will cite a URL in future answers. Processing a page and selecting it for an answer are different events. Ranked's indexing explanation

For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says no new AI text file or special structured data is required. Existing SEO foundations still apply, and eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. This guidance concerns Google's features, not a universal specification for every AI product. Google's official guidance

Consequently, do not judge a project solely by whether an llms.txt file was added. Ask whether important pages can be reached and understood, whether claims are accurate and whether readers can find the details they need.

Improve pages that also help real customers

If pricing or service regions are unclear, publish current conditions on the relevant page. If the intended audience is unclear, explain suitable use cases and limits. Use evidence you can stand behind, such as product specifications, original photos or documented procedures.

These are editorial improvement suggestions, not guaranteed ranking tricks. Avoid manufactured praise or unnatural copy written only to influence an AI system. A clearer page should still be useful if a person reads it without an assistant involved.

An editorial GEO review loop
  1. Define: Keep a stable set of customer questions.
  2. Record: Save answers, sources, dates and languages.
  3. Improve: Clarify the pages that invite misunderstanding.
  4. Compare: Repeat the checks and inspect useful visits.

Use the report to decide what to improve next

Compare the same questions alongside source URLs and the pages changed during the period. Model changes and search behavior can affect answers, so avoid attributing every movement to your edits.

Google reports traffic from its AI search features within overall Web search data in Search Console. A change in total clicks is therefore not automatically a GEO-only result. Measurement guidance
