Choose the support workflow before the AI vendor
A Shopify support tool should fit the work your team needs to finish: answering product questions, checking an order, routing an exception, or managing a queue across channels. A convincing chat demo covers only part of that process.
This shortlist compares four candidates using official documentation checked on September 5, 2026. It is an editorial selection, not a performance ranking or a hands-on benchmark. We selected products with a documented Shopify connection and a distinct operating model. Your existing inbox, required actions and staff coverage should determine which ones reach a pilot.
Four candidates and the decision each raises
| Candidate | Documented capability | Useful evaluation question |
|---|---|---|
| Zipchat | Shopify knowledge, AI conversations and configured escalation | Can it answer your product questions and pass exceptions to your existing team? |
| Gorgias | Helpdesk with Shopify context and an AI Agent | Do you need AI and human work managed within one ticket workflow? |
| Tidio / Lyro | AI knowledge, handoff settings and Shopify product recommendations | Can your team maintain its knowledge and routing alongside live support? |
| Shopify Inbox | Staff conversations plus an optional automatic Inbox agent | Does the native storefront workflow cover your actual requirements? |
The capability summaries are supported by the official sources in the next section. The questions are ours. None of these rows establishes better accuracy, lower total cost or a higher resolution rate.
Where each candidate belongs in a pilot
Zipchat: its Shopify integration describes catalog-based answers and configurable human escalation. Evaluate it with a mixed conversation: product selection followed by a policy exception. Check whether the receiving teammate has enough context to finish the job. Official Shopify integration
Gorgias: its Shopify connection brings customer and order context into tickets; connecting a store is required for AI Agent. This makes it a relevant candidate when helpdesk workflow is central to the purchase. Ask a teammate to process the handoff, not just watch an AI answer. Gorgias Shopify connection

Tidio / Lyro: documentation covers knowledge sources, configurable handoff and Shopify product recommendations. The recommendation feature has integration and subscription requirements. Confirm those conditions in your account, then test whether recommendations remain useful when a requested variant is unsuitable. Lyro configuration・Shopify recommendations

Shopify Inbox: current documentation includes an opt-in Inbox agent that answers automatically from store knowledge, alongside staff conversations. Do not evaluate it solely as an old-style live chat box. Confirm what is available in your store and compare its scope with your required channels and actions. Shopify Inbox documentation
Compare handoff as an end-to-end task
Use the same scenario for every candidate: a customer asks a routine question, adds a condition outside the published policy, then requests a person. Record what the AI says, where the conversation arrives, who owns it and what the customer must do next.
This last step can differ materially. Shopify documents that, when staff handoff is unavailable, the customer receives the store's sender email address and must initiate email contact. That is different from a ticket being delivered automatically. Inbox conversation handling
For your own acceptance criteria, require a visible destination and an accountable recipient. Test while staff are available and unavailable. If a shopper must repeat their request, include that friction in the comparison rather than counting the AI's final message as a successful resolution.
Budget for the same workload
Do not compare an entry plan from one vendor with an unrelated usage tier from another. Write one workload description: expected conversations, channels, people who need access, peak demand and any required order actions. Ask every vendor to price that same scope.
Capture the included AI allowance, the billable unit, overage behavior and features tied to higher plans. Leave unconfirmed amounts blank. For Zipchat specifically, our pricing guide models replies and additional packs; that unit should not be assumed to match other vendors.
Add time for source maintenance, answer review and escalated cases. A plan that covers your message volume may still leave a substantial operating workload. A useful comparison shows software spending and staff effort separately so neither hides the other.
Run a comparable test, then shortlist
Prepare a small set of representative questions with approved answers and source links. Include an ambiguous product request, a missing delivery estimate, a policy exception and a handoff. Keep the source material and expected result consistent across candidates.
Record factual errors, incomplete answers, successful clarification and handoff completion separately. One overall score can obscure a serious error in an otherwise fluent conversation. Repeat relevant cases after correcting a source or changing an instruction.
Choose the candidate whose documented scope and observed pilot results meet your requirements. Retain a native option if it covers the job; consider a broader helpdesk when routing and team operations justify it. If Zipchat remains a candidate, read our source-based review.
