Reviewing website visibility in search results and AI-generated answers

What is GEO—and what can you measure?

GEO, or generative engine optimization, means working to improve how your business appears in AI-generated answers. Imagine a shopper asking an AI assistant for a coffee subscription. Does your store get mentioned? Is the description accurate? Does the answer link to your website?

Ranked AI offers tools for tracking these appearances. Start with a small set of customer questions, save the answers, and track mentions separately from links and visits. That gives you a clearer picture than a visibility score alone.

This guide uses official information checked on September 6, 2026. We haven't run a live Ranked AI experiment; the prompts and workflow below are examples. Our Ranked AI overview covers the broader service.

Check which AI tools are tracked—and how often

Ranked's documentation says you can add questions under Rankings → Prompts, choose a country, and view appearances and citations in the results. Adding prompts

The public pages we reviewed describe different tracking coverage: the operating guide lists monthly rescans and three services, the free checker lists daily tracking and six models, and the software page lists eight models. Before comparing results, ask which models your account tracks, how often results update, and whether you can run another check manually. Free checker · Software overview

Save the date with each result. A dashboard can look up to date even when the answers behind it were collected earlier.

Ask questions customers would actually use

Questions containing your brand name show what happens when someone already knows you. Also test questions from people who haven't heard of your business. For a coffee store, you might use the following examples.

Example questions to track
TypeExampleWhat to inspect
ProblemHow should a beginner choose low-acidity coffee beans?Useful selection criteria
ComparisonWhich small coffee tasting sets ship to my country?Options that ship to the right country
BrandedWho is [Store Name] best for?An accurate description of the store
Before purchaseDoes this set arrive as whole beans?Correct product details

Keep the wording consistent so you can compare answers over time. Track languages and markets separately, and include the same delivery region or budget each time. If you change a question, start a new comparison for it.

Separate mentions, citations and visits

  • Mention: your business is named in the answer.
  • Citation: the answer links to a source, which may be your website.
  • Visit: someone actually reaches your site.
  • Inquiry or order: that visitor takes a further step.

These aren't interchangeable. An AI tool can mention your brand without linking to it, and a link doesn't tell you whether anyone clicked.

If your business appears in two of your ten tracked questions, that's a result for those questions—not 20% of all AI answers. Check which page was linked and whether the answer describes your current products correctly.

A missing mention isn't always a problem. If you don't ship to the country in the question, your store may simply be a poor match.

An indexed page isn't guaranteed to appear in an AI answer

Ranked describes an AI Search Indexing workflow. This describes the provider's process, not a promise that every AI platform will link to your page. A system may process a page without choosing it for an answer. Ranked's indexing explanation

For Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Google says no new AI text file or special structured data is required. Existing SEO foundations still apply, and eligibility does not guarantee inclusion. This guidance concerns Google's features, not a universal specification for every AI product. Google's official guidance

For example, adding an llms.txt file isn't enough to show that a project has worked. Focus on whether your important pages are accessible, accurate, and easy to understand.

Improve pages that also help real customers

If pricing or service regions are unclear, publish current conditions on the relevant page. If the intended audience is unclear, explain suitable use cases and limits. Use evidence you can stand behind, such as product specifications, original photos or documented procedures.

Write for the customer reading the page, too. Clear prices, delivery details, and product descriptions are useful even when someone reaches your site without an AI assistant. They aren't guaranteed ranking shortcuts.

A simple GEO tracking routine
  1. Define: Keep a stable set of customer questions.
  2. Record: Save answers, sources, dates and languages.
  3. Improve: Fix unclear or outdated page details.
  4. Compare: Repeat the checks and review website visits.

Use the report to decide what to improve next

Compare answers to the same questions and note which pages you changed between checks. AI models and search behavior also change, so an improvement or decline isn't necessarily caused by your edits.

Google reports traffic from its AI search features within overall Web search data in Search Console. A change in total clicks is therefore not automatically a GEO-only result. Measurement guidance
