Turn product details into a first draft

Staring at an empty product description? Shopify Magic can help turn a short list of product facts into copy you can edit. Start with the item's material, size, contents and care instructions, then tell it who you're writing for and what the description should include.

This guide uses official documentation checked September 6, 2026. The fictional product, prompt and sample draft below were created by our editorial team; they aren't output from a hands-on Magic test or evidence of improved sales.

Example: from product facts to a description

Let's use a fictional Alder Desk Tray. These are its invented specifications for this example:

  • Powder-coated steel with a charcoal finish.
  • External dimensions: 24 × 12 × 3 cm.
  • One open compartment; one tray included.
  • Wipe clean with a dry cloth.

A prompt you can adapt

Write an English description for the Alder Desk Tray, for someone organizing small everyday desk items. Facts: powder-coated steel, charcoal finish, external dimensions 24 × 12 × 3 cm, one open compartment, one tray included, wipe with a dry cloth. Start with one factual introductory sentence, then three short bullets covering construction, dimensions and care. Keep it under 100 words and use a friendly, practical tone. Use only these facts. Don't invent accessories, certifications, origin, protective properties, warranties, reviews or device compatibility.

Replace every specification with your own verified product information. The length and format are our suggested choices, not Shopify requirements. Clear goals, facts, constraints and a requested format follow Shopify's prompting guidance.

What a finished draft could look like

Editorial example—not text generated by Shopify Magic:

Keep small everyday desk items together in the Alder Desk Tray.

  • Simple construction: powder-coated steel in charcoal, with one open compartment.
  • Check the fit: external dimensions are 24 × 12 × 3 cm; one tray is included.
  • Easy care: wipe with a dry cloth.

Notice what the example leaves out: it doesn't claim the tray is scratch-proof, fits every tablet or comes with accessories. Those details weren't in the brief.

How to use Magic in Shopify

On desktop, open Products, select the item and choose the text-generation icon in its description. Enter your prompt in the language you want the description to use. Review the generated text before saving. Product description generation

Saving a published product makes the revised description visible immediately. Keep a copy of the old wording before you start, especially if you're editing a live page.

You don't have to accept the first draft unchanged. Shorten the opening, reorder the bullets or replace general praise with details that help someone decide whether the item suits them.

Give Magic the facts shoppers need

For most products, begin with the exact item name, relevant variant, material, dimensions, package contents and care instructions. Add compatibility or other claims only when you can support them.

Then say what the shopper is trying to decide. For a desk tray, dimensions and layout matter. For a replacement part, the exact fit may matter more than a brand story.

Resolve conflicting measurements before prompting. Keep temporary offers and delivery promises separate unless you intend to maintain them in the description. A seasonal promise can become outdated while the product itself stays the same.

Check the draft before making it more persuasive

Shopify cautions that generated descriptions may add benefits or facts associated with similar products. You're responsible for the published copy. Accuracy guidance

Check these details first:

  1. Numbers and units: do dimensions and quantities match the product record?
  2. Variants: does the description apply to this size, material or model?
  3. What's included: could the wording imply extra items?
  4. Claims: is every promise about performance, compatibility or origin supported?

For the tray, “24 × 12 × 3 cm externally” follows the brief. “Fits every tablet” doesn't. Neither does “scratch-proof.” Remove unsupported wording rather than replacing it with a softer-sounding claim such as “damage-resistant.”

Make it easy to scan and choose

Once the facts are right, put the main use first and make dimensions, contents and care easy to find. Replace vague praise with information: “one open compartment” helps more than “the ultimate organizational solution.”

Shopify's writing guidance emphasizes concrete details, supported benefits and scannable presentation. Writing product descriptions

Ask someone to read only the draft and explain what arrives, which version it describes and who it might not suit. Anything they can't answer is a useful editing clue.

Writing for international customers

Use the same verified product facts across languages, then adapt wording and units for each market. For an English-speaking audience, decide whether shoppers need metric measurements, imperial measurements or both. If you convert, check the arithmetic and use consistent rounding.

Japanese copy may need different number formatting or explanations of technical terms. In every language, check that delivery, warranty and package details apply to that market rather than carrying them over automatically.

Save one good page before scaling up

Start with a small set of products whose specifications are complete. Keep the old description, prompt and approved copy together, preview the page on a phone, then inspect the live result after saving.

If you keep correcting the same problem, improve the input brief before generating more descriptions. Track editing time as well as drafting time. A change in sales alone won't show what the new copy caused, since prices, promotions and traffic may change too.
