Concept illustration of comparing four AI chatbot options for a store

Which Shopify chatbot should you look at first?

The right chatbot depends on what you need help with. Are shoppers asking which product to buy? Is your team juggling support requests? Or do you simply want a way to answer questions on your storefront?

Start with the job, then choose a couple of tools to try. These four options cover different approaches to Shopify chat and AI support.

This comparison uses official sources checked on September 5, 2026: Zipchat, Gorgias helpdesk, Gorgias AI Agent, Tidio for Shopify and Shopify Inbox. We haven't run a side-by-side store test, so this is a feature-based shortlist, not a ranked performance test or a complete market survey.

Zipchat: explore it for product and policy questions

Consider Zipchat when shoppers regularly need help choosing products or understanding shipping and returns. A useful first question might be, “Which version will fit my space?” Write down the relevant dimensions and see whether the conversation uses them correctly.

The important result is a suitable answer, not just a confident one. Include a product with several variants and a question that needs clarification. Our Zipchat review explains the features and tradeoffs in more detail.

Gorgias: explore it for a shared support operation

Gorgias is worth investigating when the problem includes how your team handles requests, not just what the AI says. Think about a customer who asks a routine question, then needs another teammate to approve an exception.

In a demo, ask to see assignment, conversation history and what the next person receives. Gorgias documents both shopping and support roles, so don't assume it only handles after-sales questions. Agent roles

Tidio and Lyro: explore them for AI and human support together

Tidio is another option when you want your team and AI to share the work. Check which components and subscriptions are included in the setup you're considering. A customer may begin with an AI answer and come back later needing a person.

Follow that whole conversation in a trial. Can your teammate continue naturally, or does the customer have to start over? Our Lyro review explains the product choices and conversation allowance.

Shopify Inbox: check what's available in your own store

If your main need is storefront chat, take a look at Shopify Inbox before assuming you need a separate service. Current documentation includes an opt-in agent as well as staff conversations. Check eligibility and configuration in your actual store. Inbox documentation

How to compare two tools without getting overwhelmed

First, check the essentials: your Shopify account, customer languages, required channels and any action you need the app to perform. A feature only helps if it's included in the subscription and setup you're considering.

Down to two options? Our Zipchat vs. Gorgias comparison focuses on AI conversations and helpdesk work. Zipchat vs. Tidio looks at AI, staff replies and flows. If you're deciding whether to add another app at all, start with Zipchat vs. Shopify Inbox.

Then give both tools the same small set of questions, with personal information removed. For each, write down what a useful answer should include. Try:

  • A straightforward product question with a clear answer.
  • A request missing a detail, such as a size or order reference.
  • A return or delivery question with an exception.
  • A request to speak to a person.
  • A question the store's information doesn't answer.

Check correctness, useful follow-up questions and whether a person can take over with enough context. If you need an action such as processing a return, ask for a safe demonstration of that exact action. Explaining a policy and carrying it out aren't the same capability.

Compare the total cost for your workload

A reply, a conversation and an automated resolution can be different billing units. Give each vendor the same expected number and type of requests, plus a busier-month example. Ask for the base charge, included usage and what happens when you exceed it.

Use the pricing guide for the tools on your shortlist to turn that workload into a budget:

These are different billing units, so equal headline allowances don't mean equal capacity. Add time for keeping information current, checking answers and handling follow-up.

Don't judge the trial only by how many chats it handles. Record whether customers got the help they needed, including repeat contacts. A purchase after a chat doesn't by itself prove the chatbot caused the sale.

Make a small start, then decide

Choose one type of question to begin with, a teammate to review it and a date to decide whether to continue. Keep your existing support route available while checking the new one.

Our AI support quality checklist gives you example questions and a simple way to record what needs fixing before you expand.

If you're replacing software, our Zipchat alternatives and Gorgias alternatives cover more of the transition questions. If Gorgias fits your shortlist, take your sample questions and expected volume to a demo so the quote matches what you need.
