What is segmentation in Omnisend?
Segmentation means grouping contacts by something they have in common so you can send more relevant emails. A new subscriber might appreciate a buying guide. Someone who already bought the product may need care instructions instead.
In Omnisend, you build these groups using rules, such as subscription status or purchase history. Start with one clear group—“email subscribers who haven't ordered”—and a message that suits them. You can build the rules yourself or ask the AI Segment Builder to help.
This guide uses official information checked on September 6, 2026. We haven't tested these segments on customer data; the examples are for planning your own campaign. Our Omnisend overview covers the wider product.
Segments update as customer information changes
Omnisend describes saved segments as automatically updated groups based on their filters. Contacts can enter or leave as their data changes. Segment basics
For example, someone who makes a purchase should no longer match a “no previous orders” rule once that order data reaches Omnisend. Check a few contacts to see why they match; the total number alone won't show whether the rule is correct.
Use clear names and keep a note of the rules. “New customers” could mean several things; “first purchase in the last 30 days” tells a teammate exactly what you mean.
Three simple segments to start with
| Message | Audience idea | Review point |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner buying guide | Email subscribers with no orders | Avoid excessive overlap with welcome messages |
| Product care advice | Subscribers who bought that product | Check the exact product or model |
| Early access | Subscribers with at least two orders | Describe real eligibility and dates |
The data available for these groups depends on your store connection. Check that Omnisend has the purchase or product information you need. AI can't build a reliable purchase-history segment from data that hasn't been collected.
Add a time limit when it changes what you'd say. A recent buyer may need setup help, while someone who bought a consumable months ago may be ready for a refill reminder.
How to describe a segment to AI
The AI Segment Builder is documented as turning natural-language requests into rules, showing matching contacts and supporting refinement. AI segment builder overview
Try a prompt like: “Email subscribers who placed their first order in the last 30 days.” Before saving, check the subscription status, date range, and purchase rule the AI creates. Make sure its definition of a first order matches what you mean.
“Our best customers” is too vague on its own. If you mean people with two or more completed purchases, say that. If you mean people who spent a certain amount, include both the amount and time period. Specific instructions are easier to check.

What's the difference between AND and OR?
AND means all conditions must be true. OR means either condition can be true. Omnisend supports both when you combine filters. Filter combinations
“Subscribed to email AND no orders” describes a different audience from “Subscribed to email OR no orders.” The latter can include subscribers who have already purchased and non-subscribers without an order. It is broader than many beginners intend.
For a more complex group, try three imaginary customers: one who should qualify, one who shouldn't, and one near the cutoff—for example, someone whose order was just over 30 days ago. Check each against your rules before relying on the displayed total.
- Purpose: Describe the message and intended recipient.
- Rules: Build the conditions manually or with AI.
- Check: Try examples of contacts who should and shouldn't match.
- Send: Review subscription status and exclusions.
Not every contact in a segment can receive marketing emails
Segments can contain contacts with different subscription statuses, but Omnisend sends marketing campaigns to subscribed contacts. The number in a segment may therefore be larger than the number eligible to receive your email. Subscription-state guidance
Also think about who should be left out. Someone who already bought your starter bundle may prefer care tips to another offer for that same bundle. Read the message as a customer, not just as the person building the list.
Before editing an existing segment, check which automations use it. A small rule change can affect those messages, too. Keep a short note explaining what the group is for and who maintains it.
Start small and learn from the first send
You don't need ten segments on day one. Add a group when it lets you send a genuinely different message. Otherwise, you're creating more work without giving customers anything more useful.
After sending, look at clicks, replies, and unsubscribes. With a small group, one person's response can move the percentages noticeably. Look for a pattern over time rather than judging the approach from one email.
For the first message itself, follow our welcome-email guide. As the audience grows, revisit the pricing worksheet so the budget and maintenance effort remain comfortable.
