An open gate, a tidy product shelf with a stack of question cards, and a speech-bubble window showing an answer, arranged in order

The short answer: make your store readable, specific and easy to verify

You cannot buy a spot in ChatGPT's answers, but you can remove the obstacles that keep your products out of them. The work is mostly classic SEO plus a few checks: let the right crawlers in, write product pages that answer real questions, keep structured data accurate, and track what the AI tools actually say about your store.

Two official sources set the ground rules. Google's documentation for AI features says there are no extra requirements or special optimizations to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and that standard SEO fundamentals still apply. OpenAI's crawler documentation says a site needs to allow its search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, to appear in ChatGPT search answers.

This guide walks through six steps, then shows where a done-for-you option like Ranked AI fits. Everything below was checked on October 13, 2026.

What people mean by "ranking in ChatGPT"

There is no ranking table like Google's results page, so the useful goal is being mentioned, cited and linked. You will see three terms for the same effort: GEO (generative engine optimization), LLMO (large language model optimization) and AI search optimization. None has an official definition, and Google simply calls the surfaces "AI features."

Three outcomes are worth separating:

  • Mention: the answer names your store or product.
  • Citation: the answer links to your page as a source.
  • Visit or sale: someone clicks through and buys.

Each step below moves one of these. Our guide to tracking AI mentions with Ranked AI covers measurement in depth, so this article stays on the how-to.

How to get your products recommended by ChatGPT, step by step

Work from access to content to measurement. Skipping the first step wastes the rest.

Step 1: Let the right crawlers in

OpenAI documents three separate bots. OAI-SearchBot is the one that surfaces sites in ChatGPT search, and allowing it is needed to appear in those answers. GPTBot is used for content that may train OpenAI's models. ChatGPT-User visits pages when a person asks ChatGPT to, and it does not decide whether you appear in search.

The settings are independent, so you can allow OAI-SearchBot and still disallow GPTBot if you do not want your pages used for training. OpenAI says a robots.txt change can take about 24 hours to show up in search.

For Google, the guidance says pages must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to appear as supporting links in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Check that robots.txt, your CDN and your host are not blocking Googlebot, and verify your site in Search Console. Google also notes that meeting every requirement does not guarantee crawling, indexing or serving.

Step 2: Rewrite product pages to answer buyer questions

Google's helpful-content guidance asks for original information, thorough coverage and headings that describe the content accurately. For a product page, that means a plain-text answer to each of these:

  • Who is it for, and when would they use it?
  • What are the facts: materials, dimensions, capacity, compatibility?
  • How does it differ from similar products?
  • What are the shipping, returns and warranty terms?
  • How do you use and care for it?

Keep important details in text, not only inside images. Start with your five best sellers and fill every gap you find.

Step 3: Build an FAQ from real customer questions

Pull ten recurring questions from support email, chat and reviews. Answer each in one or two sentences first, then add conditions and exceptions. Link FAQ answers to the relevant product pages and back. When a policy changes, update the FAQ and the product page together so they never disagree.

Step 4: Add structured data that matches the page

Google's product structured data guide describes two types. Product snippets suit pages where shoppers cannot buy directly. Merchant listings suit pages where you sell the item and let you add details like shipping and returns. Adding the required merchant listing properties can also make a page eligible for product snippets, and pairing on-page markup with a Google Merchant Center feed widens eligibility.

For AI features, Google says structured data should match the visible text and that you do not need special AI markup, new schema types or AI-specific files. Check what your Shopify theme or apps already output before adding anything. Keep Merchant Center and Business Profile details current too.

Step 5: Check how your store is described elsewhere

AI answers draw on more than your own site, so audit what is out there:

  • Search your brand name and note which non-owned pages rank.
  • Check that reviews and roundups describe your products correctly.
  • Compare marketplace and retailer listings against your own specs.

Fix what you control first, then ask outside sites to correct errors.

Step 6: Track mentions and visits

Google says traffic from AI features is counted in Search Console's Performance report under the Web search type, so it is not broken out separately. For conversions and time on site, Google suggests using an analytics tool such as Google Analytics.

For mentions, pick ten buyer-style questions, such as "best store for [your category]," and run them monthly in ChatGPT and Google's AI features. Record the date, the question, whether your store appeared and whether it was linked. Answers vary between runs, so look at trends, not single results.

Where Ranked AI fits

Ranked AI is a done-for-you SEO service with AI visibility tracking, so it covers the ongoing work in steps 2, 5 and 6 and the audit side of steps 1 and 4. According to its pricing page, every SEO plan includes AI visibility and prompt tracking, unlimited web copy, on-page optimization and 35+ languages.

  • Standard: $99/month, 25 focus keywords, 1 blog article a week
  • Plus: $198/month, 50 focus keywords, 2 articles a week, 2x backlinks
  • Enterprise: $349/month, 100 focus keywords, 4 articles a week, 4x backlinks, dedicated account executive

Ranked AI's prompt tracking checks whether your website appears in the text or citations of answers from ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok and Meta. You pick a country per prompt, and results rescan monthly. That replaces the manual monthly check in step 6.

The 7-day trial includes the SEO software, keyword and prompt recommendations, technical and AI optimization audits, backlink audits and one custom article. A card is added when you create the project, and the first month is billed when the seven days end. Plans are month to month.

During the trial, look at three things: what the audit flags on your store, whether the recommended prompts match what you sell, and whether the sample article sounds like your brand. Plan details are in our Ranked AI pricing breakdown, and the broader verdict is in the Ranked AI review.

FAQ

Is "LLMO" different from SEO? The names differ, but Google's guidance says the fundamentals of SEO still apply to AI features. Think of it as SEO plus checking how AI answers describe you.

Do I need an llms.txt file? For Google's AI features, the documentation says you do not need new machine-readable files or AI-specific text files. Check other providers' own documentation for their requirements.

How fast will changes show up? There is no fixed timeline. OpenAI says robots.txt changes can take about 24 hours to affect search, and Google says recrawling can take days to months.

Where should I start today? Check that OAI-SearchBot and Googlebot are allowed, then rewrite your five best-selling product pages.

If you would rather hand off the recurring work, check Ranked AI's plans and start the 7-day trial.
