Choose who should answer before installing
Shopify Inbox now offers both staff conversations and an optional Inbox agent that responds automatically. Describing it only as a manual chat app misses an important part of the current product. Existing Inbox users retain staff handling until they activate the agent. Shopify Inbox overview
The useful decision is which conversations your team wants to delegate. A small store may prefer personal replies for every shopper; another may want AI to cover routine questions outside staffed hours. Neither choice establishes better service on its own. The quality of the information and the follow-up process matter.
This guide uses official documentation checked on September 6, 2026. The launch plan below is an editorial recommendation, not a report of a live installation or measured revenue gains.

Three different kinds of assistance
Staff chat, suggested replies and an automatic agent require different supervision. A generated draft is still something a staff member checks and sends. It should not be confused with an agent speaking directly to a shopper.
| Option | How it works | Recommended review |
|---|---|---|
| Staff conversations | Your team writes and sends messages | Coverage and response quality |
| Suggested replies | AI drafts text for eligible English stores | Check every draft before sending |
| Inbox agent | Automatic customer responses when enabled | Sources, routing and conversation audits |
Suggested replies are English-only and require an English storefront and admin, an existing Inbox conversation and a catalog of no more than 200,000 products. Shopify explicitly separates this composing aid from agent responses. A missing suggestion can reflect insufficient store information. Suggested reply requirements
Price and eligibility: check the whole setup
The official app listing shows Shopify Inbox as free. That describes the app price, not the full cost of operating a store or staffing support. Budget for your existing Shopify subscription, content maintenance and the people handling exceptions. Shopify Inbox app listing
Inbox supports Basic, Grow, Advanced and Plus. The automatic agent requires an active online store, Inbox installed and new customer accounts; legacy customer accounts do not qualify. Assignment can cover all new conversations, only time outside staff availability, or none. Agent requirements and assignment
Before changing account settings, write down how customers currently sign in and check the impact on their shopping journey. Treat an account migration as its own change to review, rather than a checkbox to rush through during chat setup.
Prepare facts separately from tone
Use our Shopify Knowledge Base setup guide for the FAQ creation and maintenance workflow.
The agent persona controls communication style. Product details, shipping terms and other business facts belong in the catalog, policies, published content or Knowledge Base. Putting a delivery promise only in the persona may not make it a reliable answer source. Persona and source information
Create a short ownership register: who updates shipping deadlines, who approves return exceptions and who maintains size information. For each common question, identify one approved source and remove conflicting wording elsewhere. This is particularly useful when a campaign page still contains an expired offer.
For tone, use instructions that staff could also follow: answer directly, avoid sales pressure and acknowledge a customer's concern. Test whether a warm style remains clear when the answer is disappointing. Politeness should not turn an uncertain delivery estimate into a guarantee.
Keep instant answers purposeful
With the agent off, instant answers display predefined responses to questions a shopper selects. With it on, the agent supplies conversation starters and responses instead. AI-generated instant-answer suggestions are English-only. Instant answer behavior
Our suggested starting topics are delivery regions, the return process and finding the right size. Write each answer around the next useful action. A return answer might point to the approved policy and explain how to request help, rather than trying to squeeze every exception into one paragraph.
Avoid copying policies from another store. The question “Can I return this?” is only useful if the answer distinguishes a general policy from a decision about a particular order. Have staff handle the latter when the facts are incomplete.
Install, then test the customer journey
Shopify's setup documentation covers installing Inbox, adding the storefront widget and configuring its settings. Conversations can be accessed on desktop or the iOS and Android apps; staff permissions affect available actions. Installation and permissions
Our proposed sequence is to prepare the sources, assign a support owner, configure the widget and then run a controlled review before expanding coverage. Check a mobile product page as well as the desktop home page. Verify that the widget does not hide another essential control and that the greeting explains what help is available.
Use a test matrix containing a straightforward product question, an unknown specification, an expired promotion and a request for a person. Include an order question while signed out. Record the answer, the source you expected and whether the shopper can take a sensible next step. These are suggested checks, not claims that we performed them on your store.

Verify what happens when AI cannot help
When staff handoff is available, the conversation moves to the Unassigned folder with its AI context. When it is unavailable, the shopper receives the store's sender email address and must initiate that email; the agent does not send it for them. Conversation handoff
Assign someone to the unassigned queue, including a backup for absence. Test the unavailable-hours path using the email address customers will actually see. A correct answer that leaves a shopper with an unmonitored contact route is still an operational failure.
Do not use “outside office hours” as a synonym for “safe to automate.” Your first pilot should have a named person reviewing the results at a defined time, with a clear decision about when to disable automatic coverage.
Improve the right thing after launch
Training uses practice scenarios or ratings of real responses to suggest persona updates. You review and accept those suggestions; training does not replace the store facts the agent uses. Training your Inbox agent
Classify a bad response before editing anything. A wrong shipping charge calls for a source correction. An abrupt but accurate response calls for a style review. A missed escalation calls for a routing investigation. This avoids spending time rewriting a persona when the actual problem is an obsolete policy page.
Track your own correction count, missed handoffs and staff review time. Decide in advance what would make you retain, narrow or pause the pilot. A larger number of chats is not enough to establish that customers received better answers.
When to compare another tool
Start with a written requirements list: channels, languages, actions, review controls and reporting. Evaluate those requirements against the current configuration rather than assuming a paid tool is automatically better or that a free app covers every support process.
Our Zipchat versus Shopify Inbox comparison helps frame the purchasing decision. For the operational side, use the Shopify AI support pilot guide. Keep Flow and Sidekick automation separate from customer chat: a workflow and a conversation agent solve different jobs.
