Check what Shopify already provides

Start with Shopify Inbox if your requirement is storefront messaging and its current agent covers the journey you need. Evaluate Zipchat when you can identify a specific gap worth an additional tool. Paying for a second system is a decision to justify with a test, not a necessary step for every Shopify store.

This guide uses official information checked on September 5, 2026. We have not compared the products in a live store. It deliberately does not describe Inbox as “human chat only”: Shopify now documents an optional Inbox agent. Shopify Inbox overview

Product scope is based on Zipchat's listing and Shopify's agent documentation. Questions and pilot priorities are editorial recommendations.

Confirm eligibility before designing the pilot

Shopify documents an active online store, Inbox installation, and new customer accounts as agent requirements. Legacy customer accounts do not work with the agent. Official requirements

Check the actual account settings and available controls before planning a rollout. Treat a customer-account change as a separate project: record its effect on the sign-in journey and existing processes, rather than changing it solely to make a chatbot comparison possible.

For either tool, distinguish “the feature is documented” from “our store can use it in this configuration.” Write down anything that cannot be demonstrated during evaluation.

A small team's decision example

Imagine a merchant whose customer messages mostly concern product suitability and delivery policies on the storefront. Start with a sample of those questions in Inbox. Include ambiguous phrasing, an unavailable item, and a request that should go to a person. If the journey works and staff can maintain the source information, the example does not provide a reason to add Zipchat.

Now imagine the missing requirement is handling a separate messaging channel. Define that channel and the exact customer journey before evaluating Zipchat. Test identity, context, handoff, and who receives a notification. Channel availability by itself does not prove the workflow is ready.

These are hypothetical scenarios, not evidence that one product has better answer quality.

Measure the cost of adding a system

Use the Zipchat pricing guide to model usage if the additional workload is clear. Also allow time for setup, policy changes, monitoring, and staff training. Confirm the current Inbox terms in the installation and account screens; this guide does not promise unlimited free AI usage.

Keep a list of facts maintained in more than one place. During the trial, change a delivery policy and observe how the correct answer is restored. The ability to maintain accurate information through ordinary business changes matters more than an isolated demonstration.

Decide with an explicit acceptance checklist

If Inbox is your first pilot, use our Shopify Inbox setup guide to separate staff replies, suggested replies, and agent assignment before launch.

  1. Verify account eligibility and the required customer journey.
  2. Use the same approved product and policy information.
  3. Check a request for a human and an out-of-hours conversation.
  4. Record wrong answers, repeated questions, and review time.
  5. Choose the simplest setup that passes the requirements, and document how to pause it.

Do not run competing chat widgets across the live storefront simply to compare them. Use a controlled test and inspect mobile usability before release. If you need a broader shared support workflow, read Zipchat versus Gorgias.
