Illustration of digital products moving through payment to email delivery and download

Start with one finished download

Shopify can sell digital products, with an app handling delivery after purchase. It is worth considering if you want your own storefront for ebooks, printable files, artwork or audio, with product information and customer support in the same place. Official digital-product guide

Start with a file that is ready to sell. Your first goal is a complete journey: understand the product, buy it, receive it and use it. A large catalog can wait until that journey works.

This guide focuses on downloadable products. A booking business or a membership course has different requirements, so list those separately before choosing apps. Official sources were checked on October 3, 2026.

Use Shopify's free Digital Products app for delivery

Digital Products is Shopify's own free app for selling files and links. Its official listing describes adding assets to products, sending access after purchase and setting access limits. The current name is Digital Products; readers searching for Digital Downloads can use the same official listing and check that Shopify is the developer. Shopify App Store

The help documentation gives a maximum file size of 5 GB and describes automatic delivery by email after successful payment. That is a useful starting point for a finished PDF, audio file or artwork bundle.

For a product delivered through an external link, think beyond the destination URL. Does the buyer need an account? Will they have permission to open it? Is it obvious what they bought once they arrive? Explain those requirements before checkout.

Separate the free app from the cost of running a store

A free delivery app does not make the storefront free. Budget separately for your Shopify subscription, the payment methods you choose and any optional domain or apps. The three-day free trial is a preparation window; introductory paid offers and ongoing prices should be checked for your location.

You do not need to choose every future marketing tool before listing your first product. Price the essentials first: a product page, checkout and delivery. Our Shopify pricing guide explains the subscription decision.

Include your time in the product plan, too. Even a small download can generate questions about file formats, software compatibility or updates. Decide how you will answer those questions before expanding the catalog.

Tell buyers exactly what they will receive

A good digital-product page removes ambiguity about the file. Prepare the description alongside the actual download so the two stay consistent.

  • State the format and what is included.
  • Explain any software or equipment the buyer needs.
  • Distinguish a finished file from an editable template.
  • Make the preview clearly different from the purchased content.
  • Describe your usage terms and how to contact you.

For example, a printable planner should say whether it is a ready-to-print PDF or a template the buyer can edit. If it is designed for a particular paper size, make that easy to find. These details help someone decide whether the product will work for them before placing an order.

You can use Shopify Magic to help with wording, but the file itself determines what you can promise. Check the description against the finished product rather than treating generated copy as the specification.

Remove shipping, then connect the file

A digital-only item should not be configured as a physical product. Shopify's instructions explain how to deactivate Physical product for the product or variant. A variant is a selectable version of a product, such as a different format or bundle. Official shipping-setting instructions

Create the listing, check whether it needs shipping, attach the correct asset in the app and choose a delivery method that matches your promise. Work through one item before copying the approach to the rest of your catalog.

Automatic delivery makes sense when the finished product is ready to hand over immediately. A personalized file that you create after purchase needs a different delivery plan and a clear lead time. The product description should match what actually happens after payment.

If you also sell physical goods, check digital-only, physical-only and mixed carts. Each tells you something different about the shopping experience. Shopify explains that checkout skips the shipping-address step when no items need shipping. Checkout form guidance

Test through to opening the file

Seeing a product on the storefront is only the first check. Follow the purchase through to the customer's inbox and the downloaded file. Shopify's simulated payment tests require selecting a paid plan, and live orders cannot be placed while the payment provider is in test mode. Official test-order guide

For your own test, check that the purchased version matches the delivered version, the email explains what to do and the link is easy to use on a phone. Then open the file in the environment you tell buyers to use.

Consider the first support request as well. Could you identify the product and version from the customer's message? Would a short readme or clearer filename answer a likely question? Small improvements here can make the product easier to use without adding another app.

Before replacing or deleting files, plan how existing buyers will access their purchase: Shopify warns that file changes can affect earlier download links. File-management guidance

Common questions before you launch

Can I just put a file link in the product description?

Keep a public preview separate from paid delivery. For a paid download, use the purchase-to-delivery flow described in Shopify's app guidance so your listing and fulfillment have distinct jobs.

Do download limits replace usage terms?

An access setting and the terms you give buyers serve different purposes. Explain how the product may be used and make those terms available before purchase.

What should I prepare for the trial?

Bring one finished file, a preview and a short description covering format and use. Start a new Shopify store with the three-day free trial, create that listing and prepare delivery with Digital Products. That gives you a concrete product to evaluate before building out the rest of the store.
