Concept illustration of checking interface language, AI replies and human support separately

Japanese chat is supported; the full operating setup needs checking

Gorgias supports Japanese in its customer-facing chat language settings. That does not establish Japanese coverage for the admin interface, vendor support, or AI answer quality. A team with English-speaking administrators and someone qualified to review Japanese customer communication can evaluate it against a specific workflow. Official chat language guide

If your buying requirement is an entirely Japanese environment, resolve that requirement before committing. A translated greeting is only one part of serving shoppers in Japan.

We checked the official sources on September 19, 2026. This article is a preparation guide, not a report from a merchant account we operated. Setup steps are attributed to the documentation; the evaluation scenarios are our recommendations.

Split language support into five buying requirements

Write down which person or interaction needs Japanese. This prevents a product's broad multilingual claim from becoming an assumption about every feature.

Sources: chat documentation and official Shopify listing. Your storefront's sales currency does not establish the currency of a Gorgias invoice. Likewise, a Japanese-speaking person on your own team does not establish that the vendor offers support in Japanese.

“Unverified” is not a statement that a feature is unavailable. It identifies a requirement to resolve with the provider rather than guessing from a different part of the product.

Configure the chat language and test the fallback

Evaluate both the Japanese experience and what happens when a browser requests another language. The official guide makes language settings available across Helpdesk plans to the account owner and admins.

The documented route is Settings → Channels → Chat, then the chosen integration's Language tab. Add Japanese and customize the supplied copy as needed. These are documentation-based steps; we have not performed them in a live merchant account. Official configuration instructions

A visitor whose browser language matches a configured language receives that version. Otherwise, chat falls back to the default language. For a store serving Japan and an English-speaking market, test both configured languages and one unconfigured language.

Check practical messages such as out-of-hours notices and human handoff text. Fluent copy is still wrong if it promises an immediate reply while the Japanese-speaking team is offline. Storefront translation and chat configuration should be checked separately.

If you use automation features, verify their language coverage too. The guide explains that chat and automation language settings must align. Do not assume that translating the widget completes every customer-facing workflow.

Test Japanese answers against meaning, not just fluency

A polite answer can still misstate the policy. Before evaluating AI Agent, identify the current sources for delivery, returns and product details. Its Knowledge feature can use sources such as help articles, website content, URLs and documents. Resolve conflicting Japanese and English policies before adding them. Official knowledge guide

Build tests around the mistakes that would matter to your store. These are suggested scenarios, not measured product results:

  • A shopper asks whether an item will arrive tomorrow: does the answer distinguish dispatch time from delivery time?
  • Someone asks about returning an opened item: does the answer preserve the eligibility condition?
  • A customer refers to an older purchase: does it confirm the correct order?
  • A shopper asks for a person in Japanese: does the handoff reach the right queue?
  • A customer withdraws a cancellation request: does the system recognize the negation?

Use Playground for initial conversational checks. The documentation distinguishes ordinary test conversations from Actions that can affect real customer or order data. Keep Actions off while evaluating answers. Playground documentation

Have a Japanese-speaking reviewer assess factual accuracy, eligibility conditions, order references, escalation and tone separately. Include product names, incomplete messages and mixed-language requests. An English test passing does not prove that the Japanese version preserves the same boundaries.

Give Japanese handoffs a real owner

A handoff is complete when a person can pick up the work. Gorgias documents escalation for explicit human requests and configured topics, among other signals. That does not remove the need to test the Japanese expressions your customers use. Official handover guide

For a regional team, define the destination queue, staffed hours, and person responsible for unresolved requests. Test a Japanese message outside Japanese support hours and a mixed-language conversation that changes topic. Our tags and rules guide covers routing organization separately.

Customer support delivered by your staff and technical support delivered by Gorgias are different services. If an English-speaking administrator handles configuration issues, make sure that person is available when the Japanese team needs a change. Japanese-speaking vendor support remains a pre-purchase question.

Keep trial and billing checks in the same evaluation

Chat localization does not settle the cost of AI. The Helpdesk entry point is Starter at $10 per month; current pricing promotes AI across plans while describing outcome-based charges. Ask for the full configuration you intend to test. Official pricing and our pricing guide provide the billing context.

Trial duration differs between the account-creation guide, which describes 30 days, and the Shopify listing, which shows seven. Confirm your signup route, payment requirements and any automatic charging before selecting a plan. The referral button here requests a demo; consult the official site for trial signup. Account creation

For paid accounts, cancel through Gorgias Billing and usage or the customer success manager for managed contracts. Removing the Shopify app alone does not cancel the subscription. Include the end date in your trial decision process. Cancellation instructions

Questions for your Japanese-market demo

Does Japanese chat mean the whole product is translated?

No. The official chat setting establishes customer-facing localization. Admin language, vendor support and AI answer accuracy are separate requirements.

Can review scores prove Japanese answer quality?

No. Public ratings describe reviewers' experiences across different use cases. Our Gorgias review covers those findings, but your policy-specific Japanese tests remain necessary.

What is the next step?

Request a demo with Japanese test questions, required channels, team coverage and billing requirements prepared. Ask the presenter to show the customer experience and the receiving team's workflow for the same conversation. That connects the localization claim to the work your store actually needs done.
