Start with the work your Shopify team needs to finish
Put Gorgias on your shortlist when Shopify order questions are central to your support workload. Compare it with Zendesk using the same customer request, staff responsibilities and purchasing assumptions. A lower headline price is not a useful answer if it describes a different setup.
An existing Zendesk installation may already connect several departments and established workflows. Keeping that setup has value. A store starting from scratch has a different decision: how much of its daily order support can it organize around the new helpdesk?
We checked the providers' pricing pages, the Gorgias Shopify listing and the relevant integration documentation on October 4, 2026. The practical next step is a Gorgias demo using one representative order inquiry and your normal and peak-month volumes.
Both connect to Shopify, so compare the actual task
Shopify integration is not a yes-or-no distinction between these products. Gorgias documents order handling in its integration guide and Shopify Actions guide. Zendesk's own integration documentation also covers order information, refunds and cancellations.
That means “Zendesk cannot refund Shopify orders” is not a sound basis for choosing Gorgias. Instead, bring the requests your team handles: cancel an unfulfilled order, correct an address, or issue a partial refund. Ask what is supported, which permissions are needed and what happens after the action.
Include your fulfillment process. Changing an order in a helpdesk does not automatically establish what a warehouse can still change. The useful comparison runs from the customer's request through the operational outcome, not just to a button on a screen.
Normalize seats, volume and billing period
| What to compare | Gorgias | Zendesk |
|---|---|---|
| Pricing basis | Helpdesk ticket volume and AI usage | Per-agent plans and required add-ons |
| Shopify order handling | Check supported actions and their limits | Official integration includes refund and cancellation guidance |
| Adding AI | Confirm AI and Helpdesk billing together | Auto assist requires the Copilot add-on |
| Inputs for a fair quote | Your order workflows and normal and peak volume | The same requests, staffing and commitment period |
The two pricing models reward different comparisons. Gorgias's pricing page describes Helpdesk tiers around ticket volume rather than per-agent pricing. Zendesk's pricing page advertises plans priced per agent. Compare your team size and workload together.
For example, adding seasonal staff without much change in ticket volume is a different scenario from handling a sales spike with the same team. Gather both a normal month and a peak month before requesting quotes.
Gorgias's Shopify listing starts at USD 10 per month for Starter Helpdesk, consistent with our service summary. That is not a quote for every AI or channel configuration. For Zendesk, specify the product package, billing commitment and required add-ons. Do not compare an annual-billing equivalent on one side with a monthly contract on the other.
Your comparison should include staff access, support usage, AI usage and any voice or SMS requirement. Where the providers define usage differently, ask each to price the same workload rather than substituting one raw count for another.
Separate AI answers from AI actions
Answering a policy question and changing an order are different requirements. Decide which you need before evaluating AI features.
Gorgias's current pricing page presents Helpdesk and AI Agent together, with AI charges tied to resolved conversations. Ask how the Helpdesk and AI components are counted in your quote. Do not assume that an AI-handled conversation removes every other charge.
Zendesk also offers AI-assisted Shopify workflows. Its cancellation and refund recipe states that auto assist requires the Copilot add-on. Distinguish a standard integration action from AI assistance and from an autonomous workflow; they are not interchangeable purchasing terms.
In the demo, ask where staff approval belongs. A routine eligibility question and an exception to a returns policy should not automatically follow the same path. Make that distinction part of the setup you compare.
Count the work of moving an established inbox
A migration decision includes the workflow you already have. Consider conversation history, tags, saved replies, team responsibilities and connections to other business tools.
If Zendesk also handles requests outside ecommerce, moving only Shopify support could split information across systems. If you are starting with a shared email inbox, the trade-off may be simpler. Neither situation makes the same product the automatic winner.
Map one request from arrival to customer reply: identify the customer, find the order, make the necessary decision, take the action and explain the outcome. Then ask each provider where that work happens in the proposed setup.
Confirm what history can move, what remains available elsewhere and what assistance is included. During a transition, decide which inbox staff should reply from so customers do not receive duplicate or conflicting messages.
Use an ordinary request and an exception in the demo
Two closely related examples reveal more than a broad feature tour. Try canceling an unfulfilled order, then ask about a fulfilled one. The customer may use the same word, but the staff decision and operational steps change.
Watch how the agent finds context, what happens when an action is unavailable, and how the conversation continues after the order work. Fewer clicks are useful only when the workflow still gives the team the information and control it needs.
Our Gorgias order-actions guide can help shape those questions. Pair it with the pricing guide when preparing your quote request. The getting-started guide covers the broader setup once you choose a direction.
Which is cheaper for a small Shopify store?
Store size alone does not answer that. Compare the total for your staff, request volume, required features and commitment period. A small team with heavy support traffic differs from several staff members sharing a light workload.
Should an existing Zendesk customer switch? Identify the problem first. Established integrations and a workflow the team understands are reasons to examine a move carefully. Repeated manual work around Shopify orders is a reason to test Gorgias with specific examples.
Can AI replace the need for a team workflow? Keep the decisions that need people visible in both proposals. A sensible comparison includes the exception handling, not just the automated answer.
Bring your most common order request and your monthly volumes to a Gorgias demo. Compare the resulting workflow and complete quote with the setup you would actually buy from Zendesk.
