Checking the meaning of an authentic customer review across translations

Want shoppers to read reviews in their own language?

Picture an English-speaking shopper viewing a review written in Japanese. Translating the “Write a review” button doesn't help them understand the customer's comments. Loox treats interface translation, review translation and AI summaries as separate features.

Use review translation to make individual comments readable in another language. Use a summary to give shoppers a quick overview of existing feedback. You may need one, both, or neither yet.

This guide uses official documentation checked September 6, 2026. We haven't tested translation accuracy on a live store; the checks below are editorial suggestions. Our Loox review covers the wider app.

How to start with review translation

Loox documents the settings under Settings → General → Localization. Choose your primary language first, then enable Auto-translate reviews.

On its own, translation displays reviews in that primary language. With Multilingual support also enabled, the review text can follow the language a shopper selects on your storefront.

Start with one product page. Read a review in the primary language, switch the storefront to another language and check it again. Look at both the surrounding buttons and the customer's words.

The multilingual guide lists limitations for Sidebar and Carousel widgets. Check each display you actually use rather than assuming one successful product-page check covers the entire site.

How AI Review Summaries help shoppers

A summary gives readers a quick way into a product's reviews. It appears in the product's Reviews Widget and needs at least ten published reviews on an eligible product. It summarizes existing feedback; it isn't another customer's testimonial.

Summary text is generated automatically and can't be edited manually. Read it alongside the underlying reviews, and check the display settings or contact support if it loses important context. The card identifies its AI origin.

For example, check whether a comment about one size has become a statement about the whole range. Or whether a customer's preference about texture sounds like an objective product fact. These are things to look for, not errors we've measured in Loox.

Example review check, not a Loox screen
  1. Select: a product with varied feedback.
  2. Compare: original reviews with the translation or summary.
  3. Switch: inspect both storefront languages.
  4. Preview: check readability on your phone.

What about AI Review Stories?

Stories turn feedback into tappable slides and require at least fifteen published reviews. Their current FAQ says they don't support multilingual switching and appear in the store's primary language.

That means translating ordinary reviews doesn't make Stories switch languages too. Get the main review section working for your customers first, then decide whether Stories add something useful.

You can't rewrite Stories text manually, but you can hide individual slides or a product's entire story. Preview the placement on mobile so the extra display doesn't make the purchase button or product details harder to find.

A quick translation checklist

Choose more than simple five-star praise. Comments about fit, dimensions, delivery and drawbacks contain details shoppers use to decide.

  • Measurements: are numbers and units preserved?
  • Product names: is the review still clearly about the right item or variant?
  • Negatives: does “not too heavy” still mean the same thing?
  • Context: is a personal experience still presented as one person's experience?
  • Layout: can shoppers read the full text and reach individual reviews on mobile?

Keep a note of any issue alongside the original review so it's easy to explain to support.

Common questions

Is automatic review translation free?

It requires Convert or above. That's separate from multilingual interface controls. See our Loox pricing guide for the plan costs.

What if a product only has five reviews?

It won't meet the thresholds described above. Focus on collecting authentic feedback first; our review request guide will help you get started.

Can a summary replace individual reviews?

Keep individual reviews available. A summary helps shoppers start reading, while the original comments provide the details and exceptions behind it.
