Grouping customers by shopping interests for relevant email campaigns

Different customers may need different messages

A new subscriber and a returning customer can both like your store while needing different information. Segmentation means defining a group that shares a useful condition, so the message has a clear reason to reach those people.

Start small. “Email subscribers who have not ordered” is easier to explain and check than a dozen vaguely defined VIP groups. This guide uses official information checked on September 6, 2026. The audiences and prompts are editorial examples, not tests on customer data. For the product context, see our Omnisend overview.

Think of a segment as a rule, not a frozen address list

Omnisend describes saved segments as automatically updated groups based on their filters. Contacts can enter or leave as their data changes. Segment basics

For an audience defined by no previous purchase, a completed order changes the relevant condition. But that only works as expected when the necessary order information reaches the platform. Check why a person matches, rather than inspecting the group size alone.

This distinction also helps teams work together. A name such as “New customers” leaves room for interpretation. A documented rule gives the next person a clearer way to understand and maintain the audience.

Start with a message that justifies the group

These are planning ideas, not guaranteed filters in every connected store. Available data depends on the integration. If an event has not been collected, AI cannot create its history just because you request an audience based on it.

Choose a condition you can explain using information already present. Add a time window only when it changes the message you would send. For example, a recent buyer might need setup help, while a customer who bought a consumable months ago might need information about a refill.

Give AI a specific audience description

An editorial prompt to try is: “Email subscribers who placed their first order in the last 30 days.” Inspect the resulting subscription condition, date range and purchase rule before saving it. If your store needs a different definition of a first order, resolve that before launching the campaign.

Avoid descriptions such as “our best customers” unless you also explain the criteria. If you mean two or more completed purchases, say so. If you mean a spending threshold, decide the relevant period and amount. Clear instructions make the output easier for a human to review as well.

AND narrows; OR provides alternatives

AND requires all linked conditions; OR permits either condition. Omnisend documents both operators for segment filters. Filter combinations

“Subscribed to email AND no orders” describes a different audience from “Subscribed to email OR no orders.” The latter can include subscribers who have already purchased and non-subscribers without an order. It is broader than many beginners intend.

When several conditions are grouped together, write three example customers on paper. One should clearly qualify, one should clearly fail and one should sit near the boundary, such as an order just outside the time window. Compare those examples with the rules before trusting a plausible-looking total.

An editorial audience review process
  1. Purpose: Describe the message and intended recipient.
  2. Rules: Build the conditions manually or with AI.
  3. Check: Compare qualifying and non-qualifying examples.
  4. Send: Review subscription status and exclusions.

Membership does not replace sending permission

Omnisend can segment contacts of different subscription states, but marketing campaigns are sent to subscribed contacts. A segment’s size should not be treated as the number automatically eligible for your campaign. Subscription-state guidance

Also decide whom to exclude. Someone who already bought a particular introductory bundle may benefit more from care instructions than another invitation to buy that same bundle. Review the message from the recipient’s perspective, not just from the list-building screen.

Before changing an existing group, check where it is used. A small edit can affect a connected automation. Keep its purpose, owner and definition in a short internal note so that future maintenance is deliberate.

Keep the first system manageable

A small store does not need ten segments on day one. Create distinctions that lead to meaningfully different messages. Otherwise, the maintenance burden can grow faster than the benefit.

After sending, inspect useful clicks, replies and unsubscribes alongside the size of the audience. A single person can move a small group’s percentage substantially. Avoid declaring a winning strategy from one unusually good send.

For the first message itself, follow our welcome-email guide. As the audience grows, revisit the pricing worksheet so the budget and maintenance effort remain comfortable.
