Choosing between an independent storefront and a shared marketplace for the same ceramics

Choose the sales model before choosing the platform

Shopify is the stronger fit for building your own storefront. Etsy is worth considering when you want to sell eligible products within an existing marketplace. The decision starts with how you plan to reach buyers, not which homepage looks better.

Imagine selling handmade mugs. With your own store, you can introduce the collection, explain the glaze, and help shoppers choose a size in one branded experience. On Etsy, your listing needs to stand on its own when someone searches and compares individual products. Both routes require good photos and clear descriptions; they put different demands on your time. Shopify's official comparison

Traffic and merchandising are different jobs

With Shopify, plan how people will reach the store while you build it. That could mean a social account, search content, or an existing customer audience. Pick one practical starting point and design the product page around the questions those visitors will bring.

For a storage brand, that might be a short demonstration leading to a page with dimensions, capacity photos, and delivery details. You do not need to launch every marketing channel at once. You do need a plausible path from discovery to purchase.

Etsy gives you a marketplace setting, but appearing in that setting does not guarantee attention. Your listing still needs to explain what makes the item relevant: material, size, use, and how it is made. Think of Shopify as planning the whole shop and Etsy as making each listing do its job within a shared shopping environment. Shopify also describes using the two together in its multichannel guide.

Compare the full cost, not just the headline fee

Separate fixed costs from the fees attached to each order. Shopify Basic costs $39 per month on monthly billing, or $29 per month billed yearly on the US pricing page. Annual billing is a commitment, not a monthly subscription at the lower price. Payment processing remains a separate cost. Shopify US pricing

Etsy charges $0.20 per listing, with a four-month listing term, and a 6.5% transaction fee. That transaction fee includes charged shipping and gift wrapping. Payment processing is separate. Check any setup fee shown during onboarding and the terms for advertising you use. Etsy's fee guide

Use the same product margin and shipping assumptions in both columns. Then add the platform-specific costs. A claim about no third-party transaction fees with Shopify Payments does not mean card processing is free. Avoid deciding that one option is cheaper until the comparison reflects your actual payment setup and selling costs.

Product fit matters as much as store design

Check Etsy's product rules before treating it as an available channel. Its Creativity Standards define categories for items made, designed, handpicked, or sourced by a seller. Review the relevant category for your own product. Etsy's standards

Next, list what customers need to understand before buying. Does one photo and a size description do the job? Or do shoppers need a comparison between collections, an explanation of materials, and examples of compatible accessories? The more you want to guide that complete shopping experience, the more useful it is to sketch an independent store.

A simple exercise is to write the three questions a first-time buyer would ask about your best product. Place the answers on a draft Shopify page. This makes the decision tangible: you can judge whether the store format helps you explain the product rather than choosing on a feature count.

Selling on both starts with an inventory plan

Before adding a second channel, decide how stock and orders will stay in step. If a one-of-a-kind mug sells on Etsy, someone or something needs to stop it being sold again through your store. Assign that responsibility before expanding the catalog.

Be especially careful with integration advice. As checked on October 3, Shopify's current help documentation says Marketplace Connect does not accept new Etsy connections. Existing Etsy connections can continue. Follow that current support guidance when planning a new setup. Marketplace Connect help

The official app listing also identifies its supported marketplaces. Being able to operate an Etsy shop and a Shopify store does not mean this particular app will connect a new Etsy account. Evaluate the connection method, sync coverage, and cost before promising your team automatic inventory updates.

Questions sellers ask before switching

Can I add Shopify without closing Etsy?

Yes. Give each channel a clear job. You might start your independent store with the products that need a richer explanation instead of moving the entire catalog at once.

Is Shopify too much for a small business?

Judge it by the work you need the store to do. A small catalog can still benefit from a clear branded shopping experience. Start with required features and regular costs rather than paying for a higher plan because of hoped-for sales.

Which one will generate more sales?

That depends on the product, presentation, audience, and execution. Choose the model you can run consistently, then use your own results to decide where to invest more time.

Build one product page before making a bigger commitment

Try Shopify free for 3 days and build a page for one product you are ready to sell. Bring the photos, the reason to choose it, and the shipping information. Those details will tell you more about the fit than an empty theme preview. Before continuing, review your US plan price and payment setup, then choose a manageable launch scope.
