Choose the job before the chatbot
The best fit for a Shopify store depends on the work being purchased. Product advice, routine service questions and a shared support operation create different requirements. Start by naming the outcome and the person responsible for checking it.
This guide shortlists four candidates from primary sources reviewed on September 5, 2026. It is not an exhaustive market survey or a hands-on ranking. We have not measured conversion, resolution rates or implementation time. The scorecard and purchasing scenarios below are our editorial framework.
| Candidate | Documented offering | Question for the pilot |
|---|---|---|
| Zipchat | Ecommerce AI sales and support | Does its conversation approach fit the assigned queue? |
| Gorgias | Helpdesk and AI Agent | Can the whole team handle exceptions effectively? |
| Tidio + Lyro | Human service tools and AI | Are responsibilities clear across components? |
| Shopify Inbox | Storefront messaging with an optional agent | Does the available store setup cover the intended scope? |
Sources for the offering column: Zipchat, Gorgias helpdesk, Gorgias AI Agent, Tidio for Shopify, and Shopify Inbox. The pilot questions are our own, not vendor performance claims.
Narrow four candidates to a useful trial
For a product-advice project, include Zipchat and another candidate that meets your channel and account requirements. Write catalog constraints before testing. A persuasive answer is not useful if it recommends an unsuitable variant or implies an unavailable option. The Zipchat review provides more context for evaluating that product.
For a service-team project, include Gorgias and Tidio in the research stage. Your scope should cover the operator experience as well as the automated answer. A customer may need a person several hours later, so test whether the next operator can continue the case.
To explore the Gorgias workflow, request a demo and bring a case that changes hands between team members. Ask to see assignment and conversation history in the staff interface.

For a storefront-first project, inspect Shopify Inbox in the actual store. Its current documentation includes an opt-in agent; do not exclude it using an older manual-chat-only assumption. Inbox documentation

These scenarios are starting points, not exclusive product categories. Gorgias documents shopping and support roles, so a simplistic sales-versus-support split would also be misleading. Agent roles
Establish eligibility before scoring quality
Confirm that each candidate can be used with your account, required language, channel and operating process. Ask which subscription and permissions are needed for the exact demonstration. If a must-have requirement is unresolved, mark the candidate as pending rather than giving it a speculative score.
Separate answering a question from executing an action. A correct description of a returns policy does not prove an agent can perform a return in your setup. When actions are required, specify who authorizes them, what conditions apply and how the result is checked. Test through a safe demonstration process agreed with the vendor.
Record the human fallback for every candidate. Include someone asking for a person, an unsupported request and an integration that is unavailable. A test is incomplete if it covers only the happy path.
Use a scorecard with evidence attached
Build a common evaluation set from representative requests, with personal details removed. Write an expected outcome for each case before seeing the vendors' responses. Include ambiguous questions, absent information and policy exceptions.
Use these original evaluation categories:
- Answer quality: Does the response satisfy the agreed policy and product facts?
- Clarification: Does it ask for missing information instead of making a consequential assumption?
- Handover: Can a person take responsibility with enough context?
- Maintainability: Can the owner correct a problem and verify the change?
- Operator effort: How much human work remains around the conversation?
- Customer outcome: Was the need addressed, including later repeat contact?
Score each case as pass, revise and retest, or fail, with a short explanation. Keep eligibility failures separate from quality scores: a high average should not hide a missing critical requirement. Choose thresholds that match your store's risks; this article supplies no universal pass rate.
Compare costs on one workload
Give each vendor the same expected request mix and a separate peak-demand case. Request the base commitment, included usage, chargeable events and extra usage behavior. A reply, conversation and automated resolution are different concepts until the contract says exactly how each is counted.
Add preparation, review, maintenance and manual follow-up to the business case. Those costs can remain after a successful automated conversation and should not be treated as free. Our Zipchat pricing guide shows one product's budget model; obtain account-specific terms for the other candidates.
Do not assign revenue gains to the software merely because a shopper used chat before buying. Decide in advance what evidence would justify an attribution claim. A pilot can still be valuable when it establishes quality and operational fit without proving incremental revenue.
Turn a trial into a rollout decision
Start with a bounded queue, an owner and a review date. Preserve the previous support route until you have verified the new one. Track unresolved cases alongside the successful examples shown in a demonstration.
At the review, choose among expanding, revising or stopping the pilot. Expansion should name the next queue and its additional checks. If too few representative conversations occurred, record the evidence gap and adjust the evaluation rather than declaring success.
Teams replacing an existing tool should also review the Zipchat alternatives or Gorgias migration shortlist. A suitable chatbot and a completed service migration are separate decisions.
If Gorgias remains on your shortlist, use a demo to discuss your sample queue, staff workflow and expected volume. Request a quote for those requirements before committing.
